“I believe in creating content that speaks volumes and breaks ground. I believe in work that empowers, inspires and ignites others to gain perspective and harness this energy.”Elise Crigar | Source: elisecrigar.net

If you look back in time Skateboarding has changed a lot, but it has always been there especially for the ones who live it. Skateboarding is much more than just a trend sport, it’s a lifestyle and to live this lifestyle it takes a lot of guts, passion and sometimes even injuries. It’s a tough sport that forces you to take risks and pushes you to go all out, and it still seems like a male-dominated sport, but be sure #girlpower is on the rise! One to watch is the California based skateboarding enthusiast and artist Elise Crigar.

She’s not only an amazingly talented artist, photographer, social media specialist, and skateboarder at heart. She is also an activist for the love of skateboarding and empowering women to get out there follow their dreams and show the guys that girls can not only look pretty but also kickass. So dare to roll with us into the sunset of Florida and get to know more about Elise and her outstanding work.

“Be driven and strong! If you want something bad enough, you can have it. There’s nothing worse than people that say something is hard or scary and won’t even give it a try. Sometimes it takes a few fails and falls, but it’s worth it if it’s something you love.”Elise Crigar | Source: vansgirls.tumblr.com

For as long as she can remember Elise has been a creative spirit and turning her passion for fine art and design into something practical was a just logic choice. And since growing up close to the beautiful beaches of Florida learning to surf at a young age was just natural and early on Elise was hooked and also fascinated with women in board sports. Hanging around skateparks seeing here friends skate wasn´t enough she was tired of hearing that girls can’t drop in. That’s when a fire sparked, and Elise wanted to prove them wrong.

Skateboarding became more than a passion. It became a way of living and through the process of learning, and taking risks she grew strong and learned a lot, not only about skating but also about life. You often have to fall and hurt yourself, but getting back up helped her to grow and be more confident, and over the years a strong relationship with skateboarding was born.

This energetic, driven and rugged lifestyle not only had a huge impact on her whole life, but it also became essential for her working ethics and passion for creativity. Elise earned her degree in graphic design, and soon she ventured into fine arts and photography, inspired by the surf and skate lifestyle.

It’s no wonder that her work also reflects Elise lifestyle through the use of different mediums like drawings, different screen printed surfaces, paper, acrylic paint, dryer sheets, wood, and other canvas. Her amazingly creative outlet hit the nerve of several lifestyles, surf, and skate brands and a perfect symbiosis came to happen when Elise had the chance to work with one of her idols, skateboarding legend Cindy Whitehead, who acquired Elise to design a stylistic coffee table book, showcasing solely imagery of girls skateboarding called “It’s Not About Pretty.” The first comprehensive photography book that showcases the female empowerment skateboarding brings to girls and women, alike.

“These girls are RAD. They are renegades, and they are fearless. They have consciously decided that it doesn’t matter what age or gender you are, you go after what you love. They fall hard, and they get back up. They keep pushing, and they never give up.”Cindy Whitehead | Source: girlisnota4letterword.com

Elise went on to host the “It’s Not About Pretty Girls” Skate Event at the local Kona skatepark to raise awareness of female skateboarding. One year ago Elise moved to southern California. She has been working as a graphic designer, photographer and social media manager for a variety of lifestyle brands like Billabong, VonZipper and VOID Magazine. With her empowering message to go out there, take risks and don’t let anyone judge you and your dreams, Elise is an inspiring personality – not only for the women out there. So we are sure that there is an Elise Crigar in every one of us. Don’t hesitate to visit her on Instagram and her blog and get inspired by her work and beautiful imagery.
