Today we’d love to introduce you to another newcomer: blogger and photographer Sophie van Daniels from Berlin. Sophie is one of those talented fashion bloggers with an eye for trend-oriented outfits and a passion for photography. Sophie had hooked us immediately when scrolling through her Instagram account – with her perfect style of minimalism and eye for aesthetic images. We wanted to know more about the 24-years-old young woman and had a quick chat with her about her passion for photography, fashion, and her favorite city Hong Kong.
Sophie founded her blog during her bachelor studies in the Netherlands. But unfortunately, her studies never satisfied her urge to create and work for very hands on. Eventually, she grew so frustrated with all of it that she decided to build her own space to be all that her studies wasn’t to her. And so basicapparel.de was born – to share her personal style, her travels, and her thoughts.
“I can’t live without a well-fitted pair of light washed blue jeans, a white tee – something I could write about endlessly, an oversized blazer and a pair of wide suit pants.“ Sophie van Daniels
If we had to describe her personal style it would be wearable, minimal and the endless interplay of feminine and masculine silhouettes. Therefore, it doesn’t seem to be a surprise that her all-time favorite designer brands – Céline, Acne Studios, Jil Sande, and Loewe – all create timeless classics, often with that little twist that differentiates them from the high street. Her not-so-secret shopping recommendation for oversized blazers is to go to your local vintage shop and browse through the men’s corner. Sophie told us that she had found her most complimented pieces that way!
Sophie is an incredibly visual person. At times, she won’t be able to explain a place or a feeling to someone with her words but with a photo or a drawing instead. That’s why she started photographing everything around her when she was 13 years old, went from analog to digital, and has been getting back to analog photography this summer. She loves working on editorials, like blog posts all by herself, equipped with a tripod and her phone to make sure that the images turn out 100 % the way she wants it to.
When it comes to the style of her photos it’s an endless process of adjusting and evolving. Taking her travel photography as an example, while in the past she wanted to make sure to have all the picture perfect sights in a shot, she now values the ordinary moments that will make you feel as if you had been there with her.
“To me, it’s about transporting a feeling through a single image.“ Sophie van Daniels
During her exchange semester in Taipeh, China, she fell in love with Asia and the diversity and culture of the different countries. It doesn’t come as a surprise that Hong Kong has become her favorite place in the entire world. The worn-off pastel-colored building blocks, the people, the food and the harbor make it a one of a kind place.
“Every time, you turn your head something new is to be discovered whether it is the golden hour light reflected by dirty windows, three dozen of aircons on grey walls or just another neon sign against the night sky.” Sophie van Daniels
Her timeless style, the perfect mix of visuals and her trendy outfits let Sophie stand out in the blogger scene. Her channels inspire us and we are curious what the future holds for the up-and-coming fashion blogger. Until then, her Instagram is always worth a visit!
