It’s safe to say that Instagram is not only the photo editing tool for your selfies, but that the app has also brought many upcoming artists and talented photographers to a whole new level of exposure and recognition. And there is definitely one amongst them worth pointing out; the seventeen-year-old Jannik Obenhoff, who modestly calls himself “just a boy with a camera” on his Instagram profile. However, with his camera, the young Bavarian (he lives in Unterschleißheim, a town near Munich) captures the beauty of his home country in such a stunning manner that it’s no wonder he has gained immense popularity. Through Instagram, the talented photographer has made new friends and continues to amaze his followers with his remarkable nature imagery. We had a chat with Jannik about his life, the mountains, and photography, so go ahead and read for yourself what he is up to.
To start things off, tell us a little bit about yourself and where you come from.
I’m Jannik Obenhoff, 17 years old and I’m from Unterschleißheim, a town close to Munich. I’m currently in the 12th grade here at the high school in Unterschleißheim.
You live close to the mountains, can you tell us more about your connection to nature and the mountains?
I always went hiking or stayed in a cabin in the mountains with my parents or my friends or we went skiing there. And now I can combine that with my hobby.
Tells us more about how you work and what motivates you, what are you trying to express through your pictures?
On one side it’s a lot of fun for me, to go to the mountains with my friends or family and to take pictures, showing other people how beautiful the alps are. It’s definitely really encouraging to take new pictures when you get so much positive feedback for your work.
Who introduced you to photography and why did you decide to share your photos with the rest of the world?
Indirectly my father introduced me to photography; he always takes photographs of our vacations and family gatherings. But what also brought me to photography was Instagram. Five years ago, the app was pretty new to me and I thought I would just give it a try. It got more and more fun to take pictures and my followers were growing too; it was great that the people liked what I was doing.
How much time and energy to you invest in photography and how much effort do you really put in your pictures?
I’m still going to school, so I don’t really have much time to go out and take many pictures; I take pictures mostly on the weekends or during my holidays. Usually, I’m editing and uploading my pictures during the week.
Tell us more about the German Roamers and your connection with them.
I’ve been a member since the beginning and we exist now for two years. We are a collective of 15 photographers from Germany and we try to raise interest for photography in Germany and all over the world. For example, in the last two years, we have organized events where we meet with others to take pictures or just to have a chat and connect.
How does it feel to get so much attention at your young age, do you feel any disadvantages?
No, actually not, it is only very time-consuming besides going to school, but I can live with that.
It’s probably not so easy to always get the perfect shot, did you ever have to go back and revisit specific spots?
Yes, for sure. Sometimes the weather is not on our side and it often happens that you come back from a tour without any good shots.
Your focus right now is on showing your followers the beauty of your landscapes at home and Germany in general. How do you always find new places for your pictures?
I often use Google maps; for example, I’m trying to look where certain lakes are. When I find one, I search images of that spot and then I decide whether I’m going there or not. I’m also looking on Instagram if others post photos of cool spots.
Can you imagine to live from photography and to travel the world regularly?
Yes, that would be cool. I’m not sure if I want to make a living of photography but, as a hobby, I will definitely stick to it and I want to travel to other continents to see them and take pictures.
You have also started your own YouTube Channel. What was your intention behind that step?
I started the YouTube channel a few month ago and I upload the highlights of my trips there. It’s fun to direct videos and edit them and I will continue doing that.
“So far, I’m not in front of the camera but I can imagine creating my own VLOGs when I’m traveling.”Jannik Obenhoff.
You are still going to school, how much time do you have left for photography and how are your plans for the future?
Like I said; usually, there is only time on the weekends or during my holidays. For the future, I want to focus on my high school degree first and after that, I want to travel for one year, but I’m not sure where yet. Afterwards, I’ll probably study but there is still time until then.
Despite his success and over 771.000 Followers on Instagram, Jannik Obenhoff has managed to stay a humble and down-to-earth guy, who is driven by the outdoors and the enjoyment of exploring the mountains. His inspiring personality and talent to capture the beauty of nature have indeed left a mark in the community and we will make sure to keep up with his adventures.
